At NWC36: Steampunk: What Is It and Why Is It So Popular?

Coming up at Norwescon 36: Steampunk: What Is It and Why Is It So Popular?
(Thursday, 5pm, Cascade 3&4)

Steampunk has been referred to as “the future trend of science fiction” but is the subgenre merely a return to the classics as spun by Verne and Wells? Join our panelists as they look at recent works of steampunk, share their opinions of what makes steampunk different from the work of the founding fathers of science fiction, and why the genre is so appealing.

Movie News & Previews Are On The March!

Each year at Norwescon the most popular panel programs are Keith & Alan’s Movie News and Previews. For the eighth year Alan Halfhill and partner Keith Johnson commit multiple sessions and countless hours of behind-the-scenes toil to bring you the latest movie news, rumors & trailers out of Hollywood and beyond.

But we’re so much more than that. We highlight the latest trends, innovations, and challenges and also the wider entertainment culture; TV shows, home video, theme parks — the whole gamut! And for our fans of the Previews, we bring in da swag! Whatever we get from the studios or publicity agencies we pass along to you, our loyal customers. Now how much would you pay?

This year there have been some changes — our panel on Friday is earlier in the day, there is no Saturday show, and our Sunday show now starts after the Fandance Film Festival. Check out our new schedule!

Friday: Previews Show #first
Grand 3
12Noon-2pm
Note earlier time!

Our biggest screen, our best sound, our largest space — we’re supersized! In our most popular, best-attended panel of the weekend we talk trailers, movies, news, rumors — the whole enchilada. With no show on Saturday, our Friday show will be especially popular so get there early!

Friday: Family Previews
Olympic 1
2:30-3:30pm

In the Family Track Room we present an hour of just family-friendly previews geared to the interests of our younger set. Though older folks are always welcome.

Sunday: Previews Show #last
Evergreen 1-2
2-4pm
Note later time!

Our final panel includes more previews, rumors and gossip. And there’s always the notorious, “why? Why? WHY?”

We hope to see you at one or more of our panels this year. Why not collect the whole set?

Carnivale in Venice/Carnival on Venus

CARNIVALE IN VENICE/CARNIVAL ON VENUS – FASHION SHOW AND TELL – INVITATION TO PARTICIPATE!!!

Our highly popular annual themed fashion show this year will take you to the heights of costume splendor as we sail the Grand Canal of Venice during Carnivale season to marvel at the opulent masquerade costumes that are seen there. The pre-lenten celebration of Carnivale or Mardi Gras is celebrated in a variety of ways around the world, but always there is a glorious tradition of dressing up in the most exciting costumes. In the rich city state of Venice, Carnivale dress up reached its full flowering in the Baroque era with elaborate, theme costumes matched with comedia del’arte masks.

From Latin Luxury to the Latin phase “Ad Astra”, (“To the Stars”), our fashion show flies off to see how Carnival is celebrated on Venus – You know it is going to be hot! Alien couture from across the galaxy, still with whimsy and elegant masks and the most resplendent interpretations of different galactic high fashion aesthetics.

It is a red carpet show and you are all invited to attend and enjoy. But the greatest pleasure is not just watching the show but be a part of it. Bring your Venetian or Venutian costume ensemble and show off your costuming creativity! The Show is Friday at 2:00 p.m. in Evergreens 1 & 2 – Come Join us for the Fun!
