Outreach

Over the years, Norwescon has developed relationships with many charitable and educational organizations. Norwescon is proud to partner with these estimable members of the Northwest community:

Clarion West

Clarion West offers workshops for writers preparing for professional careers in science fiction and fantasy, held annually in Seattle, Washington, USA. The mission of Clarion West is to provide a high quality educational opportunity for writers of speculative fiction at the start of their careers.

The EMP Museum

The EMP Museum houses dynamic programs, cutting-edge technology, and interpretative, interactive exhibitions focused on American popular culture, including many devoted to the thought-provoking ideas and experiences of science fiction. The EMP is home to the Science Fiction Hall of Fame, which honors the lives, work and ongoing legacies of science fiction’s greatest creators. Inductees are chosen by a panel of award-winning science fiction authors, artists, editors, publishers, and film professionals, and are featured in laser-etched images on the translucent, glowing Hall of Fame display. The Science Fiction Hall of Fame pays homage to the most respected of science fiction practitioners—writers, artists, publishers and filmmakers.

Science Fiction + Fantasy Short Film Festival

The Science Fiction + Fantasy Short Film Festival promotes and encourages an awareness, appreciation and understanding of the art of science fiction and fantasy cinema. Its mandate is to create a forum for creative artistry in science fiction and fantasy film and recognize the most outstanding short films produced.

KBTC Public Television

KBTC public television is the South Sound’s Public Broadcasting Station. KBTC enriches lives through programs and services that entertain, educate, inspire and are locally relevant. Its programs reflect the diverse values and perspectives of Western Washington communities. KBTC is available to 1.8 million TV households and 3.0 million viewers in Western Washington, British Columbia and Oregon.

Locus Awards

Norwescon is a proud sponsor of the 2013 Locus Awards Banquet being held here in Seattle. The Locus Awards are an annual set of literary awards presented by Locus: The Magazine of the Science Fiction & Fantasy Field. The award winners are selected from a poll of the magazine’s readers. These awards were first presented in 1971 and Norwescon is proud to be part of this long standing tradition.

The awards are presented at an annual banquet currently held in Seattle. This event draws not only many local professionals but also some of the most prestigious writers and editors in the fields of science fiction and fantasy. This year’s awards will be hosted by Hugo and Nebula award winning author Connie Willis. In honor of Locus founder Charles N. Brown, Hawaiian shirts are worn by all attendees–those brave enough not to do so may find themselves being roasted upon the fires of wit and witticism, as Mr. Neil Gaiman and others have discovered!

The Locus Awards welcome all fans of the science fiction community. For information on how to attend this exciting, lively event and show Northwest community support, please visit the 2013 Locus Awards webpage.
