At NWC36: Why Don’t We See More Ocean SF?

Coming up at Norwescon 36: Why Don’t We See More Ocean SF?
(Sunday, 10am, Cascade 2)

The earth is a water world, why don’t we see more SF and fantasy set in the ocean? We know more about the surface of the moon than we do the bottom of the ocean. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was over 140 years ago, so why aren’t more stories set under water?

  1. I’ve encountered difficulty publishing ocean science fiction. Most anthologies of ocean short stories are geared toward silkies and mermaids. I get nice rejection letters saying that my stories aren’t right for the anthologies.

  2. John Olson says:

Maybe a lack of experience with the ocean environment? One can’t write what one doesn’t know.
