Whether you’re a seasoned performer, have just picked up your first instrument, or just like to get into the nitty-gritty of aural entertainment, nwcMUSIC is sure to have programming right up your alley! Here’s what we have lined up for you this year…
Thursday
3:00PM-4:00PM
Everybody wants to make a demo. What can you do with what you’ve got? If that won’t do – and it probably won’t – what do you really need to create a good demo? How little can you get away with; or, if you have even a small budget, what can you do to turn a spare bedroom into decent recording space?
11:00PM-2:00AM
Come get shrieked in at the inaugural Norwescon 38 Open Filk! This is where you can come sing or play whatever you want, alone or with friends, to the most supportive crowd you will ever run into ever anywhere. Seriously, you have no idea. Bring your instrument, bring your voice, and put some of that participation into participatory culture!
Friday
1:00PM-2:00PM
The oldest form of geek music at SF conventions is a branch-off from folk called “filk.†It has an intentionally open and deeply participatory culture, and isn’t just folk-derived, despite the origins. This panel is your introduction to fandom’s oldest tradition of participatory geek music. Come on out and play!
2:00PM-3:00PM
A singing workshop! Does what it says on the tin. Beginners welcome – no experience necessary, because this is where you start to get some.
3:00PM-5:00PM
The oldest form of geekmusic at SF conventions is a branch-off from folk called “filk.†It has an intentionally open and deeply participatory culture, and ALL forms of geekmusic are welcome! This two-hour workshop sets up a moderated circle to give everyone not only an introduction to filk circle etiquette, but also a turn at playing or singing should they so desire! Bring your instruments, your voice, or just your curiosity and watch what happens!
11:00PM-2:00AM
Come celebrate the culmination of Friday Filkfest by filking the night away! This is where you can come sing or play whatever you want, alone or with friends, to the most supportive crowd you will ever run into ever anywhere. Seriously, you have no idea. Bring your instrument, bring your voice, and put some of that participation into participatory culture!
Saturday
12:00PM-1:00PM
It’s the songwriting workshop! Write lyrics to an existing tune, write a tune for original lyrics, find the right rhythm for your beats, find the right hip for your hop — bring your unfinished work and let’s see if we can’t help you find where it needs to go.
2:00PM-3:00PM
Hip hop has long held the tradition of the cypher, a freestyle get-together of rappers who get together to practice their art for practice, for polish, and just for fun. Come listen to some of our attending pros talk about this tradition in a nerdcore environment – what’s different, what’s not, and why does it look surprisingly similar to a housefilk?
3:00PM-4:00PM
Yes, they’re making music with GameBoys and Sega Genesises; yes, they’re rapping about hobbits. From the Blip Festival to PAX, chiptunes are the native sound of electronic gaming, and nerdcore forms their anthems. Interested? Come find out more.
6:00PM-7:00PM
Introductory participatory geekmusic — filksinging! — for older kids and young adults.
11:00PM-2:00AM
It’s the last open filk of Norwescon 38! After you’ve partied around a bit, and after the concerts are over, come sing or play whatever you want, alone or with friends, to the most supportive crowd you will ever run into ever anywhere. Bring your instrument, bring your voice, and put some of that participation into participatory culture!
Sunday
1:00PM-2:00PM
Everybody wants to make a demo. Okay, you have some equipment. Now what do you do with it? How do you set it up; how do you use it to capture or create the best sounds you can? If you didn’t make the first hour, that’s okay, come anyway.
