This Norwescon Emerging Artist Competition for young adults is part of the Norwescon Art Show with the sponsorship of The Association of Science Fiction and Fantasy Artists and is meant to promote interest in Science Fiction and Fantasy art in the next generation of artists.

To be eligible to compete, entrants must be:

  • Age 14 to 18
  • Do not need to be a member of Norwescon to apply

Requirements for art submission:

  • Art must be 2D.
  • All entries must be science fiction or fantasy.
  • The art show will be open to the general public and will be viewed by people of all ages. As a general rule regarding content, we will allow “tasteful nudes” (light R). NC-17 (such as genitalia or extreme violence) is not accepted. If you are in doubt about your piece please contact us.
  • Works must comply with U.S. Copyright and Trademark laws. As a general guideline, artists should use the 29% alteration rule of the original source material.

Timeline:

  • The contest is open for submissions from November 15, 2016 through February 15, 2017.
  • Winners will be notified by March 1, 2017.
  • Winners will be announced on or around March 15, 2017.

Displaying art in art show:

  • Winners will be asked to display their art in the Norwescon Art Show.
  • The piece should be the original unless it is computer generated, in which case a print is acceptable.
  • Art must be ready to hang on a panel.
  • Art must be available to hang on Thursday, April 13, 2017, and be on display until the close of the art show on Sunday, April 16, 2017.

Prizes

1st place winner:

  • $200 cash.
  • Two (2) Norwescon 40 memberships.
  • Invitation to the Artist Reception.
  • Display the winning piece in the Norwescon Art Show.
  • Opportunity to sell the winning piece in the art show (display and print shop).
  • One-year ASFA membership.
  • Feature in the ASFA newsletter.
  • Emerging Artist Ribbon.

2nd place winner:

  • $100 cash.
  • Two (2) Norwescon 40 memberships.
  • Invitation to the Artist Reception.
  • Display the winning piece in the Norwescon Art Show.
  • Opportunity to sell the winning piece in the art show (display and print shop).
  • Emerging Artist Ribbon.

3rd place winner:

  • $50 cash.
  • Two (2) Norwescon 40 memberships.
  • Invitation to the Artist Reception.
  • Display the winning piece in the Norwescon Art Show.
  • Opportunity to sell the winning piece in the art show (display and print shop).
  • Emerging Artist Ribbon.

To enter the contest:

Email us at artshow@norwescon.org with the following information:

  • Name
  • Age
  • Name of piece and the medium used to create it
  • JPEG file of piece

The first-place winner’s name, email address, and JPEG file of art will be shared with ASFA – Association of Science Fiction & Fantasy Artists.
