Norwescon 33 Single Pattern Contest
Single Pattern Contest Entry Form
Greetings from Terri Specht, your
Single Pattern Contest Coordinator!
Here’s what so many of you have been waiting
for, the information and rules for the Single Pattern Contest.
I’m really excited about this year’s pattern. I’ve picked one
that I think will be of interest to many people. Whether you
sew or not, like to costume, dress in garb or just enjoy attending
the convention, everyone needs a good shoulder bag. Use it for
your purchases in the dealer’s room, to hold your collection of swag
or to carry all the things you need while attending panels!
The Single Pattern Contest is all about
encouraging and providing an outlet for creativity. Regardless
of your skill level and even if you don’t sew, you can create an
entry. Whether you follow the pattern’s suggestion to recycle
an old garment into a new bag, create your own fabric or find that
perfect material to make your design, we want to see them all.
This year I’ve selected Simplicity pattern
number 2972, a shoulder bag. For more information about the
pattern you can go to the
Simplicity web site.
The pattern is available at most
sewing stores, so watch for those pattern sales!
Again this year we are hoping to provide
display space behind the Information table during the day on
Saturday. This space would be to provide an opportunity for
con goers who were unable to attend the fashion show to see all the
wonderful creations that were part of the Single Pattern Contest. If
we are able to finalize the available space, we will let you know!
If you find that you are unable to enter the
Single Pattern Contest but want to be a part of it, come to the
fashion show and vote for your favorite design - it could win the
Fan Favorite award!
Norwescon 33 Single Pattern Contest Rules
-
One entry per person.
-
You must have a Norwescon 33
badge number to enter the competition. Anyone who is a member of
the convention, including concom members, may enter (with the
exception of the Single Pattern Contest Coordinator, SPC
assistant Coordinator and judges).
-
This year’s pattern is Simplicity #2972, a
shoulder bag (http://www.simplicity.com/p-1867-accessories.aspx).
-
Entries may be made in any size as long as
they fit a human being.
-
Minor creative design changes are
permitted. This could involve such things as eliminating,
changing, or adding minor pieces, as long as the overall
silhouette is recognizable as being derived from the pattern.
-
Materials and techniques are entirely up
to you. All types of embellishments from historical to fantasy
are encouraged. However, no messy or perishable substances
allowed (Example: peanut butter)
-
Entries may be submitted for the
Beginner/Intermediate or Advanced/Expert level for judging. Do
note that at the judges’ discretion, entries may be moved to a
higher competitive level as the work merits.
-
There will also be a “non-compete”
category that anyone may enter.
-
Please pre-register by contacting Terri
Specht at
tlspecht@hotmail.com.
Entries that have not pre-registered may or may not be accepted
depending on available space.
-
Entries can be worn and used prior to the
contest judging and fashion show.
-
You or someone you designate will show
your entry in a private judging. You will be able to tell the
Judges about your design, any special materials, techniques,
provide documentation for recreations, etc.
-
You or someone you designate will then
participate in the Fashion Show (scheduled after the judging).
In addition to the Judges Awards, there will be a Fan Favorite
Award given based on the audience votes during the fashion show.
-
Awards will be handed out at the end of
the fashion show and announced during the Masquerade Half-time
on Saturday night.
-
Pictures will be taken as part of
the judging for archival purposes and may be published on the
Norwescon web site, in newsletters and used in a video
presentation during the awards announcement.
-
If you must cancel, please notify the SPC
organizer immediately so your spot can be made available for
someone else.
