Reading: Emily Smiley
Readings
Cascade 3, to

Treading Water. Dallas London’s brother is presumed dead after going missing off the coast of Maui. Now back home in San Francisco, Dallas does denial in style: no sleep and a steady diet of stale pizza, cigarettes, and intrusive thoughts about her brother’s decaying body. But when a philanthropist’s son disappears under eerily similar circumstances and Dallas starts seeing demons lurking in the shadows of her apartment, even she can’t pretend she’s fine. Enter: Death. In the form of a snarky, sexy young woman, Death is drawn to Dallas’s issues just as much as Dallas is drawn to Death’s mysterious magnetism. Desperate, Dallas makes a deal with Death: Dallas will find out who is stealing the souls of the drowned in exchange for protection from the demon hunting her. The cost? Dallas must come to terms with her incredible loss, even though it makes her wish she’d been the one to sink in the Pacific abyss. Rated PG.

Open Filk Circle: Thursday Night
Music
Evergreen 3 & 4, to

Filk’s origins come from folk circles at conventions, which mutated because of a typo and the sort of people who must enshrine a joke. The rules were simple: Everything was filk—an original song, a filk song, a popular song, or an interpretive dance. Everyone who chose to was allowed to perform and shown respect. Otherwise, simple civility ruled the day. Bring your instruments and voices to share your songs! Everyone and every type of music are welcome.

Let’s Make a Movie: Plan It!
Filmmaking Workshop
Cascade 7 & 8, to

Norwescon’s original movie-making workshop (begun in 2000) will show you how to make a movie on a shoestring in just a few hours! But first, the basics: What equipment do you need to make a movie (hint: it might already be in your pocket!), and how can you make it look better? Learn tips ’n’ tricks our pros have picked up over the years. Then, the audience will come up with an idea, develop it into something doable at a con, plan the shoot, do some quick casting, and do pretty much anything else our pros can think of. This is your chance to be a part of this unique workshop and learn how to make a movie on a budget so tiny that calling it “tiny” makes people who are tiny feel insulted. The key to making a movie, of course, is good planning. If you want to get in on the action tomorrow, you’ll want to be here.

Fanfic—Not Just Training for Going Pro
Fanfic; Streaming
Cascade 9, to

While many professional authors built their skills writing fanfiction, not everyone has to—or wants to—go pro. There are pro writers who still write fanfiction as well as their original fiction. What is fanfiction good for? What does it do better than original fiction, even beyond the obvious value of getting to play with someone else’s characters (which pro-fic also does, in its own way). This can range from giving space for queer fiction and stories that are “unmarketable” for whatever reason (too dark, too fluffy, not enough plot). Fanfic exists in a different community space than original fic.

Panelists will also explain how to build a laser; it’s not as difficult as one might think. No equations!

Writing; Writing Classes
Cascade 13, to

Micro fiction, or flash fiction, is the craft of telling a complete story in (usually) less than 500 words, or sometimes as few as 100. Attendees may leave with a tightly crafted opening sentence for their own micro fic, an outline for the rest, and maybe even a complete story. The West Façade. In Paris, at the dawn of the bubonic plague, the statues that guard Notre Dame Cathedral are forbidden from experiencing human pleasures, even during the wakenings—the one night of life they receive each month on the new moon in exchange for protecting the cathedral. The statue of Sainte Geneviève’s quiet existence changes irrevocably when a grieving woman places a citrus fruit in her hands as an offering—an offering Geneviève can’t resist eating. Eating awakens Geneviève to her desires: To climb down the wall, explore Paris, understand her human makers, and to love. Geneviève wants to be more than an object on a cathedral wall. She wants to live for herself. But when Geneviève gets what she wants, she must choose between accepting mortality or returning to the cathedral, where she will become a statue again and spend eternity watching others live. Open Filk Circle: Friday Night
Music

Filk’s origins come from folk circles at conventions, which mutated because of a typo and the sort of people who must enshrine a joke. Otherwise, simple civility ruled the day. Bring your instruments and voices to share your songs! Everyone and every type of music are welcome.
