Child
and KidKon Policies
Children
Children (anyone
under the age of 13) at the convention must be in the company
of someone 17 or older at all times. No one under the age of 13
may be left in a hotel room without the company of someone age
13 or older.
KidKon
If a Child
Becomes Ill or is Injured While in KidKon: The parent will be
contacted in person or by KidKon-issued pager while triage takes
place. Security will be called for backup. First aid will be given
when needed. If necessary, 911 will be called. If a parent does
not respond they will be fined according to KidKon late policies.
Fire Alarm:
If the hotel fire alarms sound, KidKon will not be evacuated until
absolutely necessary. When evacuation is deemed necessary, children
and KidKon workers will leave by the nearest exit and wait a safe
distance from the hotel for security to take them to the staging
area. The children will then be placed in an area where they may
lie down, play, be read to or participate in games until their
parents come to pick them up or the all clear sounds.
Earthquake:
Children will be placed against an inner wall away from windows.
In the event of damage to the section of the hotel where KidKon
is located, children will be evacuated according to the fire alarm
evacuation procedures.
Chemical Spill
or Other Hazardous Spill: Evacuation will take place as described
for fire alarms.
In the case
of any emergency, children will be kept calm and entertained by
stories, puppets, hand held games and sing-alongs. KidKon has
been evacuated only twice and both were false alarms. The children
actually loved it and begged to "practice" again the
next day.
Children's
outer wear and any other personal belongings will be kept in a
box under KidKon registration along with blankets, juice, cups,
cookies, bananas, story books, puppets and a first aid kit. That
box and registration information will be evacuated along with
the children. Parents will be expected to pay for time during
the evacuation, but normal hours will be extended until the emergency
ends.
KidKon Requirements:
Children must be age 3-12 to be accepted in KidKon. They need
to be healthy, potty trained and able to separate well from their
parents. We reserve the right to refuse children on an individual
basis.
Child Action
Response Team (CART) Policies
CART is a
group of three trained women over the age of 21, who are on call
24-hours-a-day throughout the convention. If there is any problem,
at least two CART members will stay with the child or teen until
the issue is resolved.
At no time is anyone, other than a parent or guardian, allowed
to touch a child without at least one witness.
Lost Children:
If a child is lost, the CART will be paged by security and at
least one security person will follow the child until the CART
arrives. The CART will ask the child if they wish to play in KidKon
while security attempts to locate their parent or guardian. Two
adult females will stay with a lost child at all times. If the
child does not wish to go to KidKon at least two CART members
will stay with the child where they are until the parent or guardian
can be located. The police will be called if the parent or guardian
is not located within 30 minutes.
Injured Children:
In the event that an injured child's parent or guardian is missing
or otherwise incapacitated, the CART will be paged while appropriate
life saving and first aid techniques are applied. Two or more
CART members will stay with the child until such time as a relative
or other appropriate guardian arrives.
Child Abuse:
The SeaTac Police will be called and a parent or guardian will
be contacted if they are not already present.
Rape of a
Minor: Teenagers will be treated the same as adults in cases of
rape. In any case of rape or abuse, the victim may be taken to
the Quiet Room and the room will be closed to the public. Children
who are raped or sexually abused will be treated per the Injured
Child policy with the addition that the SeaTac Police will be
called.
Teenagers
Teneagers
(13-16 years old) must have a guardian age 18 or older on site
at all times.
Volunteering:
Due to child labor restrictions, teenagers are not allowed to
work for long periods of time or do any of the more physically
straining or dangerous jobs around the convention.
Problems with
Teenagers: If there is a teenager who is not complying with the
rules and policies of the convention, all efforts will be made
to contact the parent or guardian before further measures are
taken. The same applies if the police need to be contacted.
